Day 183

I woke up around 6 am-ish and frowned. I would really like to sleep until the alarm goes off. I’ve been getting less and less sleep this week and I don’t like it.

I rolled onto the sofa and poked at a cup of coffee. After some time, I did my timed French practice on Duolingo. It was an okay practice. Some rounds were very good, other rounds were not so good. It was definitely the tiredness that hindered my progress.

By 8.30 am, hubby had scurried off to work and I scurried back to bed. I couldn’t push myself to workout or even be awake. I napped until about 1 pm and woke to still feel sleepy. I was tempted to stay in bed but I really did want to get something done with the day.

That something was the Inktober prompt; 3. Bait. I’d been thinking about this prompt as I was falling asleep and wanted to draw a Bait Shop. I found an amazing photo by Ted Engler of Fredrickson Bait Shop and used that as my reference.

After doing the lead sketch, I was a bit disappointed I wouldn’t be using watercolours on it. It was on the wrong paper, so there really was no chance to change it. So I grabbed my Tombow inks and went for it. The one thing I’m enjoying is that once you draw a line, it’s done. You can’t change it 100 times. That is also scary and horrible when you draw a line you don’t want. I like the roughness of this sketch.

The only other creative was a little guitar practice and I worked some more on the knitting project. I think it’s still going well. Hubby seems pretty excited about them and is already putting in an order for a beanie, scarf and pyjama onesie type thing with a butt flap!

Today I also cut and coloured my hair. I haven’t been to a hairdresser since I was about 22. I have cut and coloured it (mostly) black myself since then.

When I was little I had very long hair and I hated it. I would always wear it up and would never brush it. Once a month my mum would sit me down, with a comb and a pair of scissors, and she’d spend hours fixing my hair.

Then when I was around 20 I decided to have easy, care-free short hair. I didn’t need a hairdresser for that. When you have a very short cut, it can be as messy as you want and people think you’re doing something purposely stylish.

Now I have decided to keep my hair around shoulder length, so I can still wear it up and I’ve dyed it a chocolate brown like my natural colour. I even gave myself a cute fringe (bangs.) It feels so nice to have it done.

That was my day. I didn’t get enough done but that’s okay. As I always say; Doing something is more than nothing.

I hope your day is filled with light, love and laughter.

Day 179

I woke up just after 6 am and thought I better stay up. It was kinda hard. I was tired and the allure of a soft bed was overwhelming. I pushed through with the help of my knitting needles. I knit my way through the first colour, then switched to the second colour. I think it’s working this time. Fingers crossed.

Then 9.30 am rolled around and it was time for me to log onto WoW for our Sunday mythic dungeons. We did well and we had fun. Before I knew it four hours had passed and that part of the day was over.

After lunch, hubby and I got to art-ing. Wifey wasn’t feeling well so she went back to bed. Hopefully she will join us on the next art day. I worked on the next Doodlewash – September 2019 prompt; 24. Books. I found a picture of a pile of books on Pinterest and used that as my reference. I enjoyed it.

When I bought my art supplies, I got hubby and wifey their own colouring books. They are books designed for adults with very intricate designs. Wifey has a unicorn book and hubby has an owl book. He really enjoyed the experience and had a hard time stopping. It was great to see him excited about it.

Hubby art-ing

Once we had finished art-ing, I played the guitar for a little bit, then I did my French practice. It was a lovely creativity stuffed rest day.

We finished the day with a M. Night Shyamalan movie marathon. We set out to watch; Unbreakable, Split and Glass. We only managed to watch two of the movies before it got too late.

This was a sensational Sunday. I hope you’re having a sensational one too (whatever it is you’re doing!)

Day 176

I woke up just before 7 am and curled up on the sofa, almost ready to start my day. With the fuel of a yummy hot coffee, I started my French lessons. I am still working my way through the ‘restaurant’ level. Some more words are sticking, some are still a little confusing or I haven’t really got the spelling down yet.

I worked on the weekly food plan. There’s only one vegetarian meal this week. On Sunday we’re going to have an arts and craft afternoon, followed by a movie night, so it’s a much more casual Sunday dinner than normal. It’s also a great way to use the leftover vegetarian chilli from last week. I’m such a huge fan of leftovers and turning them into something new and wonderful.

Steak + Stuffed Portobello Mushrooms : Monday
Pepperoni and Potato Frittata : Tuesday
Japanese Chicken Noodle Stir-Fry : Wednesday
Shopping Day / Salmon & Cream Cheese Crostini : Thursday
Chicken Sang Choy Bow : Friday
Veggie Burger + Chips : Saturday
Hot Dogs /w Vegetarian Chilli Beans : Sunday

I had managed to get that all done before hubby left for work. Once he had disappeared into the mist, I got to working out. Wifey was still sleeping, so it was a solo mission today. I got through it in about 25 minutes, with every last part of me aching. I pushed hard.

Once that was done, I settled down to finish the shopping list and get started on art. I flicked to the World Movie channel on TV and found the Norwegian movie; ‘Ragnarok‘. While it was a little predictable, it was really well made. Two hours later and it was time to art.

I did the Doodlewash – September 2019 prompt; 21. Coins. While searching for some inspiration I saw a coin-operated laundry and decided to try it. I loved the colour palette. My watercolour pencil art is much bolder than the original.

I spent the afternoon doodling. Nothing in particular and nothing worth sharing, just some general practice with ink and lead. I topped the day off with guitar and singing. My finger tips got super sensitive pretty quickly. I’m trying to learn some new chords and cheat an F chord (no bar chords for this hand). We’ll see how that turns out.

I feel pretty content with the day. I kept busy and I have a smile on my face. I hope you’re having a fantastic week filled with creativity. Good luck if you’re learning something new. You’ll get it in no time.

Day 174

I woke up just after 7 am and felt pretty good. The weird funk from yesterday had lifted and I was ready to fill my day with creative things.

I started the day watching some Good Mythical Morning while sipping coffee. Once hubby had left for work, we contemplated working out but wifey needed some time.

So I picked up the guitar and spent a few hours playing and singing. I found a couple more songs that I could play; Pink – The One That Got Away, Jewel – You were meant for me.

Around lunchtime I put down the guitar and finally got to working out. It felt good to be doing it. It seems I enjoy doing it so much that I really do want it to be the first thing I do in the day. I got through it in about 24 minutes and I sure am feeling it now.

I was trying to wait for my art supplies before I did any art, so I moved onto French. Today it was time to start a new topic; ‘Restaurants’. There are lots of food, furniture and people words. The only thing I can remember is ‘la table.’ At least the new word journey has begun.

After that I did a little practice with a ‘Sharpie’ ink pen. I found a tutorial on Pen and Ink Sketching: 6 Shading Techniques and I tried that. Working with ink is interesting. You have to be so much more confident. This line practice was pretty eye opening.

I finished the ink practice and Homer dog alerted us to the mailman. It was very exciting. My art supplies had arrived!!!!! I ripped into the packaging to reveal my goodies. There’s watercolour and gouache paints, watercolour pencils, sketch pencils, craft kits, dual brush pens and paintbrushes. This should keep me creative for some time.

I fiddled with some of the new art supplies and drew a teacup. By the time I was done it was too late to get a photo, the sun had already set.

It was a fulfilling type of day. I feel so inspired to create art and learn how to use watercolours. I hope your day has made you smile.

Day 170

I woke just before 7 am and started the day. After a yummy coffee I dived into French. It was a terrible practice. I had my worst timed run. After getting only 3 answers right, the timer ran out. Ouch. I continued to struggle through the timed levels for about 20 minutes.

Hubby waddled off to work and we got to working out, reluctantly. I’ve really been struggling to want to do things the last few days. I just want to put my feet up and get my lazy on. Of course I won’t do that but… I really, really want to. Wifey and I got through the workout in just over 30 minutes. A solid run.

Then it was time for the Doodlewash – September 2019 prompt; 18. Spoons. I found a photo of spoons on Pinterest to reference. I don’t like using yellow pencils, although I love the colour, so I changed the yellow to orange.

The afternoon was a lovely mix of creatives. I did a little singing and guitar. I spent some time writing, just a little more work on a short story. Then I finally wrote an ‘About Me’ for this blog. It’s pretty basic. I have stories to tell but that isn’t the place for them.

” Hi! I’m Tilly Collins. Thanks for joining me on my life changing journey to 40.

I haven’t been very good to myself over the years. I have suffered from depression since I was young and that has overshadowed every decision I have made. I made poor choices regarding my health, not caring if I lived or died. I wasn’t motivated, I wasn’t creative, I wasn’t passionate about life. I was just existing for 37 years.

It took me a couple of years to form a life changing plan and it is a work in progress. To keep myself accountable I created this blog. The goal; to post every day and have something to post about. It’s an honest record of my learning, growing and changing.

I currently live on the East Coast of Australia with my husband (‘hubby’). We were married in September 2006 after two years of dating. We don’t have children but we do have an adorable little dog (‘Homer’.) We are also in a relationship with a girl (‘wifey’) from the USA. She has been part of our lives since 2012 and spends a couple of months living with us, twice a year.

The future will be filled with indulging in arts, crafts, photography, writing, music, house renovations and learning to be the best person I can be.

I hope my journey will inspire and encourage you in some way. We’re all in this together.”

“You never fail until you stop trying” Albert Einstein

Hubby has one more day at work, so that means one more day of work for me too. I don’t think I’ll get round to painting but I will definitely make up for the lack of work in that area when my watercolours arrive.

The big thing left to do on the to do list is attempt number four at fingerless gloves for hubby. If I can just get the colour transition right, I could get them finished really quick. Fingers crossed.

I hope you’ve had a fulfilling day.

Tilly

Day 167

When I heard the car start up and hubby pulled away, headed for work, I KNEW it was time to be awake. I’m not sure how hubby managed to do his morning without making noise.

Once I was up, I jumped straight into a workout. It’s nice to be back to working out. I didn’t push too hard because I still have a cough lingering but I did workout for 30 minutes.

Next it was time for French. A big shout out to MJ Seal for commenting on yesterday’s post in French. I was excited when I knew what he had said without the help of Google translate. That was the inspiration I needed. I finished the ‘Family 2’ topic and did a few practice runs. Overall it was a solid practice. The next topic is ‘Restaurant’. I will start that next week.

I did the Doodlewash – September 2019 prompt; 14. Buttons. I wanted to draw a doll with button eyes but found it hard to find a picture to reference. I took inspiration from this doll on Pinterest. I sketched the doll sitting in what I felt was a natural position for a doll.

After lunch I got my guitar out and did some practising. I don’t think I’ll be able to play bar chords anytime soon, so I’m thankful for artists who write in the key of G. One great three chord song is by Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats – I Need Never Get Old.

Half way through the practice I decided I needed a pick. I didn’t want to get out from under the blanket to grab one from the guitar case, so I grabbed the closest thing possible, a tiny toy of ‘Primo English ham’. It worked well.

It’s Tuesday so that means it’s new Happy List Day. Most of the list was easy (recycled from last week). The purpose of the list is to do things that will make me feel happier if I do them. There is no punishment or bad feels for not doing the list. It is a happy list after all.

Happy List for the week ending 22 September 2019.

  1. Make gold in WoW for sub
  2. Paint
  3. Start a knitting project
  4. Write an ‘About Me’ page on 4440
  5. Draw, 5 days
  6. Write, 2 days
  7. Play guitar, 3 days
  8. Watch 1 world movie
  9. Massage legs, 2 days
  10. Drink 2 bottles of water, 5 days

It was a fairly productive day. I just need to work on things a little faster, so I can stuff more creativity into the awake hours.

I hope your day has been productive and peaceful.

Tilly

Day 164

I had a fairly decent sleep and was ready to dive back into the art world… with colour.

After a slightly chocolatey coffee I started on the Doodlewash – September 2019 prompt; 10. Fruit. I found a neat drawing of a watermelon on Pinterest and made my version. I think mine is a little more rough around the edges but I had so much fun watching it develop. I used dark green, light green, red and black pencils.

Doodlewash – September 2019 on Three Peas, One Pod

While I was drawing I watched a ‘world movie’ called Mary and Max. I think it only qualifies as a world movie because it was on the world movie channel. It was based on a true story of an 8 year old girl in Australia becoming pen pals with a 44 year old man from New York. It follows their life long journey dealing with life as outcasts. It was moving.

After lunch I worked on another Doodlewash – September 2019 prompt; 11. Leaves. I am slightly obsessed with all things tropical, so I tackled a Monstera leaf. I used dark green, light green and dark blue pencils.

I took a break from drawing because the next Doodlewash prompt seems too hard. Can someone do it for me?

Instead I picked up my guitar and continued my practice of the song ‘Dearly Departed.’ I’m getting much closer to having it right. (As right as I can without being able to play some of the chords.)

After guitar practice, I did about 30 minutes of French. It was a fantastique practice. I worked through the ‘family 2’ topic and it was easy. Then I thought I might try some timed practice runs and had three perfect attempts. I even got questions about student/studying right.

That’s about it for the day. I feel weirdly disappointed and I’m not sure why.

I hope you’ve had a day filled with bright colours, beautiful songs and big smiles.

Happy weekend.

Tilly
