Day 216

Today is departure day eve. It’s happening in under 12 hours. This has been a tough day. Wifey and I didn’t do anything, just spent as much time together as we could. I won’t stop worrying about her until I know she’s safely back in the US.

Our Halloween treats turned up on the doorstep and that was how we finished her trip. With a mouthful of bugs.

Wifey is a huge fan of Andrew Zimmern and has watched many episodes of him eating bugs. She wanted to try some. I ordered from the Edible Bug Shop; Mixed Insects (mealworm, ant, cricket mix), Chilli and Garlic Crickets, Cricket Tortilla Chips, Dehydrated Ants, Ant Rock Candy and bug Marshmallows.

This was a big step out of my comfort zone. I’ve always been a fussy eater and the idea of eating bugs has always made my skin crawl. I can proudly say, I did it! Afterwards, my mouth tasted like a farm.

The mixed insects weren’t flavoured. I wasn’t a fan of the mealworms but the crickets were okay. The Chilli and Garlic Crickets weren’t flavoured enough. I’m sure both could be added to stir-frys.

The dehydrated ants were a surprise. The smallest speck packed the biggest flavour punch. It was almost a citrus taste.

The Cricket Tortilla Chips tasted like any other corn chip…and they were delicious.

There were three different types of marshmallows; Ants & Riberry, Crickets with Macadamia & Caramel, Mealworms with Wattleseed. The ants popped in your mouth almost like popping candy. The macadamia and caramel one was delicious (you barely noticed the crickets). The mealworm one was… I don’t care for mealworms.

The ant rock candy tasted like normal rock candy. It was hard, it was sweet. You couldn’t taste the ants. Ants are definitely one of the better bugs to eat.

That was my day. Tomorrow is going to start around 3 am and I can only imagine I am going to fall apart at the seams the second wifey steps out the door. Just… ugh!

  1. You are a brave woman! Yeah my friend tried to get me to eat the agave worm at the bottom of a tequila bottle once and I couldn’t handle the thought of that- even tho I was plastered. And I heard in the outback the aborigines would make bush “ lemonade” by dunking nests of ants in water- the Formic acid they released would give it a tart and citrusy zing 🙂

    1. I can understand why they would make lemonade like that in the outback. Ants were surprisingly citrusy. Now if there is a zombie apocalypse, I’ll know what insects I should be looking for! lol I can’t say I’ll be adding insects to my regular diet but glad I was brave enough to try. xD

      1. Haha- I think I could handle cricket flour- I’ve heard that’s a thing- but the whole bug- ick- don’t know if I could get past appearances and associations. 🤢

      2. Yeah, cricket flour would be the easiest way to do it. It’s kinda weird eating them. Your instinct is to throw it away. xD This is one ingredient that isn’t going to be a regular on my meal plan! lol
